POW/MIAs

We pray for you each night and day, whereabouts unknown, so far away.
So much time has passed as others hopes are dashed.
We love you and miss you; our hopes forever hold fast.
We think of your plight and hold steadfast you'll continue to fight
Whatever you face till someone finds one small trace
That will lead us to you for our Faith gets us through.
We know that you're out there, stay strong as we search,
Keep looking for escape routes and rescuers, God and His church.
We will not forget you till you're home with your own kind.
Family, friends, and supporters we all do gather in candle light vigils
As we pray and discuss all the ways we might matter
In procuring your release, we will destroy this sick beast.
Those that have held you captive must pay for their actions,
The pain they have caused you and all of us who forever love you.
To those chains that bind you, SET THEM FREE is our reminder.
We're coming; we'll get you, never fail
NEVER FORGOTTEN.

I take up the cause of POW/MIA AWARENESS because it seems to be a 'whispered' issue among American's today.  In essence, being a Military Mom, I understand the ideals of, don't say it, maybe we won't have to think about, deal with it.

But there are two families in the very recent past who ARE dealing with.  ie.  The Scott Speicher Family and the Matt Maupin Family.  I have had the honor and the greatest of pleasures to talk one and one with Mr. Keith Maupin.  He has been open and honest with me and both of us being Ohioans, I feel a true friendship with the Maupins.  Keith and his wife have shown me just how a family, a set of parents, gets through the everyday living of the UNKNOWN.  The massive questions they have, the unbridled FAITH, and the ability to deal with whatever may come.

Once I discussed with Keith (Mr. Maupin) that I think the worst part of the whole thing, any situation coming close to this sort of situation, would be the WAITING and the UNKNOWN.  I would want ANSWERS, even if they were bad.  I would NEED to KNOW, have closure of some kind.

For over 2+ years now, they have lived day to day, moment to moment, waiting for 'some word', a slice of information.

Can you imagine all the bones (bodies) that have been located in Iraq that they have run DNA on only to discover it is not Matt?  I can't even THINK of going through that daily.

In Vietnam we left hundreds and thousands of men behind, alive and dead.  My Marine did a tour in Hanoi, N. Vietnam as an MSG guarding the American Embassy there.  His first encounter with a man and his cart selling old dog tags of Americans was very upsetting to him.  He stood at that cart for an awfully long time.  He was attempting to determine the REAL dogtags from the Vietnamese manufactured ones.  My marine admitted he almost bought the whole bunch, real or not!  Then he said, I couldn't hardly force myself to walk away.  I felt as it I was turning my back on my fellow service members and walking away from them.  I was haunted for nights on end...endless and countless blank faces coming to me in nightmares wondering how I could turn my back on my follow brothers at arms and simply walk away.  It was awful!  I just didn't have enough money to buy them all.  And there are so many places selling GI dogtags.  How is anyone to know which ones are real and which ones are not.

I contacted the DOD and the VA in effort to find out how one would know the difference, and basically, THERE IS NO WAY OF TELLING.  Then we attempted to see about the process of reuniting a dog tag with a family member, next of kin.  Again, hopes were dashed as that too, seemed next to impossible.  People move around alot in 35 years.  We had no financing and I don't run websites requesting money, fees or donations.

But what we COULD accomplish we to bring about the POW/MIA AWARENESS that has always been sorely lacking in American's Hearts and Minds!  So here we are.

Merely to get you, the American, to REMEMBER those who are no longer seen, heard from, but who fought valiantly for freedom for all the rest of us, who are still heroes, who's fates remain UNKNOWN, who's whereabouts remain UNKNOWN, who's life and death situations remain UNKNOWN, who's families are tormented day and night, night and day, day after day, night after night, year after year.  And all they ask of you is to REMEMBER TOO, PRAY TOO.  And if you have a serviceman or servicewoman deploying, deployed, etc. please mention to them, show them a photo, and ask them to remember Scott and Matt and keep a lookout for them, keep their ears open for a rumor, a clue, a mention of a name, a place, anything...

DON'T LET MORE POW/MIAs END UP THE SAME WAY THE VIETNAM ERA POW/MIAs DID!  LEFT BEHIND, FORGOTTEN.  NOT BY THEIR BROTHER AND SISTER IN ARMS, BY THEIR GOVERNMENT, BY THEIR MILITARY HEADS.  BY THE VERY SAME ONES WHO SAID........

$tingy thanks for Iraq duty: Funds for tuition waivers MIA

By Dave Wedge and Laura Crimaldi/Exclusive

Wednesday, August 9, 2006 - Updated: 11:27 AM EST

Lawmakers have slammed the classroom door shut on Massachusetts soldiers home from Iraq and seeking to go to state college, failing to cough up $8 million needed for crucial tuition waivers.

Army and Air National Guard soldiers expecting to be rewarded for their war duty under Gov. Mitt Romney’s “Welcome Home” bill found the welcome mat ripped out last week by the Legislature as it ended its formal session without approving money for the waivers.

“One of the main reasons I joined the Army was to get money to go to college,” said David Cowing, 23, of Rockland, an Iraq war veteran who is taking out at least $3,500 in loans to cover tuition for his first year at UMass-Boston because his benefits won’t kick in in time to pay the first bills.

“I went and fought in Iraq. I shouldn’t have to worry about tuition. I should be able to go wherever I want.”

Lashing out at the “wrong priorities” of lawmakers, Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey said, “The Legislature has made the appalling decision to vote on things like tuition breaks for illegal immigrants, but they couldn’t take the time to take a vote to help our Massachusetts war heroes . . . I find it deeply disturbing.”

National Guard officials say the bureaucratic red tape has left some soldiers scrambling to meet tuition costs.

“It appears that some schools are honoring the tuition fee waivers and some are not,” said National Guard spokesman Maj. Winfield Danielson. “We remain hopeful that the Legislature will fund the tuition waiver in an informal session.”

At Framingham State College, where 17 National Guard members enrolled last year, administrators said they plan to honor the fee waiver and petition the Board of Higher Education for reimbursement.

“We’re not going to deny any National Guard member who presents a certificate of eligibility to us,” said Dean of Admissions Philip Dooher. “The money will wind its way back here. We’re not asking them to front it.”

Other state school officials said yesterday they were unsure as to how to proceed.

“We have to comply with what the legislation says and we’re in the process of trying to figure that out,” said Brian Baldwin, a Bridgewater State College spokesman.

A UMass-Boston spokesman said the school will continue to honor the tuition waiver for veterans, and advocate for better benefits for soldiers.

My name is Bob Calvert. If you do not remember me I began a talk show
while I was still living in Colorado Springs near Ft Carson. It is called
Talking with Heroes. I started it because I heard over and over again from
our troops about them wanting to know why they rarely heard on the news
the good things they had been and continue to do in helping the people in
Iraq or Afghanistan. I had also heard a lot from military support groups,
veterans and people like me who have never been in the military wondering
why we rarely hear on the news about the good our men and women do.

In October of this year I spent two weeks in Iraq interviewing our men and
women where they are serving. The purpose of this email is to request that
you help us get the word out about these interviews as they are heard both
on the internet and now in five states on Cable TV.

In May 2006 a question was made to me by an Officer with the Minnesota
National Guard asking me if I would be interested to take my talk show to
Iraq and interview our military there. It took a while to raise the money
but I recently returned from a two week tour in Iraq. I was able to
interview military personnel across Iraq so that they could talk about the
good they have been and continue to do in Iraq. I was also with Iraqi Army
Battalions near the Syrian Border and our Military Transition Teams who
are training them. The tour also included being in an Iraqi town at the
Grand Opening of a school thanks to our National Guard and families back
here in the USA. I was able to interview the Principal.

As a result of us being asked to share more about what I witnessed in
writing on the website about my experiences in Iraq, we have added a new
button on the home page. It says "Iraq Tour + More". It is on the left
side of home page or you can click on the link below:

http://talkingwithheroes.com/information.php?info_id=14

Also there is now a Major Announcement on the website on our home page.
You can go to our home page to get to it or go directly to it at:

http://talkingwithheroes.com/information.php?info_id=17

It gives information on a Regional Cable/Satellite TV Network based in
Denver, who will be airing our Iraq Talk Shows throughout the month of
December in 180 cities in 5 states. 80 of those cities are throughout
Colorado including Denver and Colorado Springs. Those who are in one of
these 180 cities will be able to see and hear what these men and women in
Iraq said to me on the talk shows. You may know people in some of these
towns. We are looking for all the help we can get to get the word out.

I invite you to read this Major Announcement on our website. If you know
people in the cities and states where these interviews will air, you might
want to let them know that they can hear from our troops on their TV in
their homes. This is also another opportunity for you and your supporters
and volunteers to reach out to more people about what you do and about
your organization. You would think that everybody in the country who says
they support our troops would want to see these interviews from Iraq. The
only way that I know of that they will have the opportunity to do so is if
others like you will help!

Everybody with access to a computer with speakers can also listen via
audio on computers every Sunday night through December 24, 2006 to what
our men and women had to say as I interviewed them in Iraq. The first show
that aired on Oct 22nd is now in our past shows/archives. We should have
the second talk show from Iraq which aired last night in our archives by
the end of today. To listen from our archives go to our home page then
click on "past shows/archives". Then click on the talk show date which you
would like to listen to.

If you would like to email me or talk over the phone about our upcoming
Iraq Talk Shows DVD release, sponsorships or anything else about our talk
show please let me know. Any suggestions that you can share about reaching
more people with these interviews would be greatly appreciated.

If you agree that our military personnel have a right to be heard then
please help us get the word out. And if you would like to receive future
updates please add your email address from our home page to our New
Newsletter List.

The Warrior Prayer uttered by Antonio Banderas' character Ahmed Ibn
Fahdlan before the final battle:

"Merciful Father, I have squandered my days with plans of many things.

This was not among them.

But at this moment, I beg only to live the next few minutes well.

For all we ought to have thought, and have not thought;

all we ought to have said, and have not said;

all we ought to have done, and have not done;

I pray thee God for forgiveness."
